While Daft Punk uses auto-tune in nearly all of their songs with a vocal track, I think that they have really hit the jackpot in this song. They have been able to create a. Auto-Tune can also be used as an effect to distort the human voice when pitch is raised or lowered significantly, such that the voice is heard to leap from note to note stepwise, like a synthesizer. And all I hear is the last thing that you said”

The use of auto-tune in this song is to symbolize how perfect the relationship once was. Julian Casablancas’ voice is auto-tuned (almost monotonously) throughout the entire song. As I’ve stated in the past, auto-tune can be used to symbolize a perfect moment in time because the use of the electronic phase-vocoder creates a track that is perfect in every note hit. This use of auto-tune is brilliant. It flawlessly incorporates the idea of a perfect relationship that is now gone.

This leads me into talking about Julian Casablancas’ choice to sing in an octave above his natural range. This creates a strain in his voice that can be noticed throughout the song. Casablancas cannot sing that high. He just can’t. However, this also symbolizes the strain in the relationship that Casablancas was unaware of. That is another reason the use of auto-tune is so brilliant in this song.

The use of auto-tune allows Casablancas to hit every note perfectly while even straining his voice so drastically. It shows that his perception of the relationship was perfect while those on the outside may not think so. (What a brilliant use of this tool!)

Punk

Overall, I commend Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas for the song they have created. While Daft Punk uses auto-tune in nearly all of their songs with a vocal track, I think that they have really hit the jackpot in this song. They have been able to create a song that has so many elements in the vocal track alone.

I want to also, briefly examine the lyrics of the song and the pain the artist feels.

“And we will never be alone again
‘Cause it doesn’t happen every day
Kinda counted on you being a friend
Can I give it up or give it away
Now I thought about what I wanna say
But I never really know where to go
So I chained myself to a friend
‘Cause I know it unlocks like a door”

The pain of loss in the artist is drastic. The audience doesn’t just hear the pain of loss, but also confusion. The artist thought everything in a relationship was fine, but also, subconsciously, knew that someone may try to take away his happiness. The confusion comes from a place of bitterness that resinates with me well. It is hard to deal with something being one way only to be told that it is another. The artist channels this pain and confusion well through the lyrics and tools used to create this song.
